How much detail does a painting require? Some might argue that a painting is only a sketch if it isn’t taken to a finished state that includes every detail. Others will say you shouldn’t do all the work for the viewer because it makes the painting less interesting. If some details are left out or ambiguous then the viewer can fill those in for herself and therefore engage more with the painting. I guess there should be enough detail to convey the story, message or idea that the artist wants to convey and once that is achieved then no more is needed. The painting below is finished as far as I am concerned even though it has far less detail than the original I think it is still able to tell the same story. You could argue it is more lively than the original and you could also argue it is less emotional. Perhaps it’s all a matter of preference.
