The idea of including symbolic meaning in art is very appealing. The allegorical painting of the events surrounding 9/11 by Graydon Parish is a powerful example of the use of symbols. We are so used to dealing with symbols from road signs to emoji’s, our very language is made up of symbols. See if you can identify the three symbols below, it’s not that difficult in fact it’s amazing how simple a painting can be.
The first image is the sun, easy right? The next two are sunrise and sunset, not too difficult either as long as you remember the points of a compass when North is at the top. East is on the right and the sun rises in the East, therefore the sun sets in the West on the left.
