Creating the illusion of texture with acrylic pens and inks is soooo fun. The paintings I have been working on today are at the stage where I can even start using coloured pencil on top of the acrylics. The inks and pens can be dribbled, splashed, splattered, blown, dabbed and scrubbed to achieve a variety of unusual and random marks. Many of the colours used are translucent which means much of the information below the translucent colour shows through increasing the variety even more. The challenge is knowing when to stop. I could carry on and introduce other mediums such as oil pastel and add a further level of complexity. Sometimes it’s best to leave a painting for a few days so that when you return to it, it will tell you what it needs. Below are a couple of close up images of two paintings I’ve worked on today.
