The next stage of the commissioned portrait is to transfer the image from the thin sheet of paper to the actual support or good quality paper. It is possible to use a sheet of graphite paper for the transfer but this will produce a rather heavy line. Rubbing a soft graphite stick on the reverse of the drawing is more controlled. 4b is a good grade to use, this can be applied just where it’s needed.

After the reverse of all the lines are covered it’s time to fix this sheet of paper over the support. Draw over the initial pencil lines with a fine ball point pen using medium pressure. It’s best to use a pen and not a pencil so you can see where you’ve been. The ideal transfer will be just visible, if it’s too dark you can always pat it with a wodge of putty rubber.
