I’m currently working on a series of paintings of brick and stone walls. Old walls like old trees hold a particular fascination due to the varied surface texture of both. The original idea was to simply recreate or give the illusion of a highly textured wall through various mark making techniques. The idea evolved from texture paintings of walls to walls with shadows. Large areas of light and dark (shadows) make the division of space more interesting. The challenge is to give the shadow a recognisable form without defining it to clearly. The painting below may or may not be finished and is called The Thinker.
