I would like this painting of the Buddha to be a painting about enlightenment. Therefore I somehow have to show in an external way what is happening internally. Enlightenment is the realisation the one’s true self is infinite consciousness or infinite being. So one idea is to make this image of a stone buddha less solid and more ethereal in some places.
For this stage of the painting I layed down a waxy white glaze over the top half of the Buddha as well as the background. I then cut into that passage with a silicone wedge to make some flowing wavy shapes. Thereby covering some parts of the image and revealing other parts. This technique will be repeated again until just the right amount of the image is hidden, and therefore at the same time revealed to suggest the transcendance or transfiguration of physical to spiritual.
