Just a short post to discuss some of the ideas in this picture. The name Adam comes from the Bible and means ‘man’. Adam was the first man in the Bible record, he was created by God and he represents the whole of mankind. Adam was naked and without shame until he ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, after which he tried to cover his nakedness (shame). In evolutionary terms man became self aware after having been in a state of non self awareness.
In Bloch’s painting Christ stands with arms raised in a welcoming gesture but also an authoritative gesture. That gesture is retained in this painting but the Christ figure is hidden behind Adam. I am still playing with the idea of having elements of the Christ figure visible through the Adam figure as if to say the two are inseparable. After all the Bible describes Christ as the second Adam, both are considered to be God’s sons.
